017 A Brush with Danger

Standing on a window ledge is the connection.  The eavesdropping cat however seems to be more at home on the window ledge than the painter does in this photo.  The composition of the photo doesn’t really describe the full danger involved in this situation; the painter was in fact two storeys above street level. (Apologies if I have now induced a vertigo attack in susceptible people!)

Perhaps a safety harness (or net) would enable more effective working, although the improvised long-handled paint brush appears to work well.  Strict adherence to any associated health safety regulations might not however allow such “making do”.  This would probably be the case in the UK, but I don’t know about Prague in 2003 when the photo was taken.

Apparent lack of safety could illustrate the issue of people carrying out work for little pay…or it could simply show a cost-conscious home-owner carrying out his own home maintenance.  I didn’t think that disturbing the painter to ask which of these it could be was appropriate in the circumstances!
