019 Men of the Mist

The connection from the last image is people wearing hoods, or perhaps unseen faces*.

This image was taken (on slide film) on a trip to Canada in October 2002 whilst sailing towards Niagra Falls on a Maid of the Mist boat (I think they have two).  The trip to Canada was initiated by the lack of UK tour dates by the marvellous Rush on their comeback tour in 2002.  (A similar thing is happening this year, but I remain hopeful for a UK visit by the band in 2016.)  It was a long way to travel for a gig, but the Toronto area of Canada also has many great sights to see.  The trip also yielded some of the artwork for the CDs my band Ethel Vince has produced, which was nice.

Anyway, having digressed, I guess this is another example of a photo needing further explanation of what it’s about because of the tight framing.  Intrigue in itself can however be interesting enough for a photo.  Also, I suppose the need for special clothing could ask the question why people (us in this case whilst on “holiday”) should put themselves into a situation of apparent discomfort.  After all, there’s nothing in the photo to suggest that enduring the wet was going to be worth the view/experience, or in this case experiencing the huge power of a waterfall at close proximity.  On another level, some might wonder why a camera was placed at risk of a good soaking.

Well, in terms of the next connection, I guess we’re talking something blue….or something depicting a hand(s).

*Unseen Faces is the working title of a continuing project whereby I chicken-out of asking people if I can photograph them whilst they’re doing something fairly interesting and instead secretly photograph them from behind.  The images so far, mostly in black and white for some reason, will soon appear in the “Projects” area of my website.
